The PUD just received word this evening that we have access to about $60,000 in CARES Act funds we can use to help PUD customers who have a PUD account balance and who have been impacted by the pandemic (e.g., unemployed, reduction in income, medical bills, childcare expenses due to remote learning arrangements, etc.). The funds must be used by November 27, which effectively means they need customers to apply for this assistance by 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 24.

This means that our hybrid instructional model that has been in place in our elementary school and set to begin tomorrow for our secondary students will continue as planned. This week the Lewis County Health Officer Dr. Wood issued updated recommendations for county schools on returning. Dr. Wood's new recommendation allows for hybrid models for different grade bands beginning on specific dates. Grades 1-6 will return to on-site learning in a hybrid model beginning on October 19th. Students will either attend on A- or B-days. Students assigned to A-days will attend on Monday and Thursday. B-day students will attend on Tuesday and Friday. All students will continue with our online format on Wednesdays. Teachers have already begun notifying families/students which group they are assigned to. While elementary students are off-site teachers will have various forms of coursework for them to work on. The District requested and was granted an exemption to the county timeline for our secondary students. Grades 7-12 will return on November 16th in a hybrid model. Students will be placed into either the A-day or B-day groups. A-day students will attend on-site on Monday and Thursday. B-day students will attend on Tuesday and Friday. Wednesday will follow the same online format already in use. Notification of which groups students are in will be announced at a later date for our secondary students. November 2nd through the 6th is conference week for the Fall. During conference week there will be no classes for students to attend. Instead, conferences for all grades will be set up with the parent, student, and teacher.

Public Service Announcement DATE: March 12th, 2020 RE: Follow-up to Gov. Inslee’s Message TO: Morton School District Staff, Students, and Community Members Today at 2:00 PM Governor Inslee announced a directive to close K-12 schools in King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties from March 16th through April 24th. Districts in these counties can continue to provide food services, instructional programs (not in large group settings), and are asked to provide child-care services to health care and first responders. Morton School District, Lewis County, and the rest of the state will continue to be monitored as this decision may grow over time to affect others. The decision will be based on the spread of the virus and the rates of confirmed cases.

Public Service Announcement DATE: March 11th, 2020 RE: Potential School Closure and District Action TO: Morton School District Staff, Students, and Community Members This morning Governor Jay Inslee and state health officials held a press conference in response to the latest data concerning COVID-19. During his remarks, he specifically stated that schools, including ours, are preparing for potential school closure and the various ramifications this could lead to. We have been planning our action steps and as more information and recommendations come in, we will respond to those as appropriate. Gov. Inslee and others continue to state that we should expect within the near future, potentially days, guidance on what actions the State may take. What you need to know at this time: School is operating as normal without any changes to our schedule or events. Planning on how to address potential recommendations are already underway with more to come. We are committed to keeping everyone in the loop with what we know, but at this time we are getting the same information as each of you. If a potential school closure does occur, we will do what is necessary for our kids to continue to reach their academic, social, and emotional goals.

March 3rd, 2020 To Morton School District Families and Staff: There is a lot of information on the media about Coronavirus, or COVID-19. When health concerns like this arise our district will work with local, county, and state public health officials in order to stay vigilant as to any issues that may affect our students or staff. We are keeping our communications lines open with the agencies involved and are making local plans for a variety of situations should the need arise. How can you prevent the spread of COVID-19? Prevention starts with practicing good personal health habits: 1. Wash your hands often with soap and water; 2. Stay home when you’re sick; 3. Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue; 4. Clean frequently touched surfaces and objects; 5. Getting plenty of rest, drinking fluids, eating healthy foods, and managing your stress can help you prevent getting COVID-19 and recover from it if you do. The Washington State Department of Health has established a call center to address questions from the public. If you have questions about what is happening in Washington state please call 1-800-525-0127 and press #. More information on COVID-19 is available from the Washington State Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In our district buildings, we are instructing custodians and staff to make cleaning touchpoints a high priority, and instruct students on the five (5) items listed above. Thank you, John Hannah Morton School District Superintendent
